Smart add-ons

Offer an optional paid extra in the cart drawer, such as shipping protection, that shoppers switch on with one tap.

A smart add-on is an optional extra charge that shoppers can switch on inside the cart drawer. It is added to the order as a WooCommerce cart fee. Today CartPops includes one add-on: Shipping Protection. Stores often use it to charge for protection against damage or loss, but you can use the label and description for something else, such as gift wrapping or priority handling.

Turn it on

In wp-admin, go to WooCommerce > CartPops > Smart add-ons.

Under Shipping Protection, switch on Enable Shipping Protection.

Set the Label, Description and Price, then click Save Changes.

Settings

Setting What it does
Enable Shipping Protection Lets shoppers add the protection to their order. Off by default.
Label The name shown in the drawer and on the order. The default is “Shipping protection”.
Description A short line under the label. The default is “Protect your order from damage or loss”.
Price The charge. It must be a positive amount in your store currency, with no more decimal places than your store uses. The default is 5.
Show Icon Show an icon next to the add-on in the drawer.
Icon Shield (Protection), Gift, Star, Heart, Truck or Sparkles.
Default State Off (customer opts in) or On (customer opts out).

If you type a price that isn’t valid, the page warns you and does not save it until you correct it.

How it works for shoppers

The add-on appears in the drawer with its label, description, icon and price, as a switch. When a shopper turns it on, the charge is added to the cart as a fee, and the drawer total updates. When they turn it off, the fee is removed. The choice stays with the shopper’s session, so it carries through to checkout.

Default State only sets the starting position of the switch for shoppers who haven’t touched it. With On (customer opts out), the fee is added to carts automatically. Use it with care, because shoppers may not expect a charge they didn’t choose. Many stores keep it Off.

Taxes

When WooCommerce taxes are on, CartPops treats the fee as taxable at your store’s standard rate. If your store enters prices including tax, the Price you set is the price the shopper pays. Otherwise tax is added to it.

Good to know

  • The fee shows on the order as a normal fee line, named with your Label.
  • The label and description can be translated with WPML or Polylang. See Translating CartPops.
  • If your Pro license expires, your add-on settings are kept but the add-on stops appearing and no new fees are added.
  • Pro analytics report how often shoppers switch the add-on on and the revenue it brings in. See Analytics.
